Happy New Years! Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes!

Wooo 2022! Come get it! I'm super excited for this year. I really feel like it's going to be a good change from the past couple we've had. Now in all fairness, I say that almost every year, I guess I'm just a little optimistic.

This past year was pretty good for me, it had it's ups and downs, but I really feel like I've improved in so many ways this year!

  • I moved three times, and SPOILER I'm moving again soon, but got to Los Angeles after a little hiatus.

  • I started my freelancing production company Maddy Goshorn Media, and it was a great first year. For the full scale of all the projects done this past year check out this link!

  • I joined HeatDance as an intern and learned so much and quickly became a co-captain of cinematography.

  • I continued voice acting, and was cast as a few roles here and there!

  • I took a traveling gig job which allowed me to travel around the country and make a nice chunk of change!

So yeah I'd say it was a pretty good year! And I started doing this blog! I wasn't as consistent as I was hoping, but hey I didn't always have that much to say. But this next year I want to try and do something a little different with the blog...

PILOT PRODUCTION

I took a class about pitching, and after talking with a few professionals about it, I decided I'm going to produce a pilot this year and start pitching with it later in 2022! Now I'm learning so much, and I wanted to use this blog to talk about the process. The ups and downs, the pitfalls and the wins, I'll update about this project on this blog every month. Maybe other creatives out there can use it as advice on the direction to head in, or at least learn from my mistakes.

First off... the idea. This part is easy right? Kind of actually. I'm sure a lot of people have an idea they would love to make into a show. And thinking is pretty fun. The next part is making it seem like a good idea to everyone else.

Next... the pitch. I'm learning how important it is to sum up your idea in a short, sweet, and witty way. I took some classes about what to include, and it'll be totally different depending on your idea. Comedy, drama, documentary, and every other idea are distinct in their own way. And it's not a bad idea to have a pitch written out in long form, five or so pages, and short, less than a page. I've written a short pitch. Feel free to check it out to see where the idea is starting from.

I'm learning that when you have almost any form of the project. You share it and ask for advice and help. This way it's a good way to start implanting the idea out in the community, as well as getting any nudge in the right direction. I submitted the pitch to the ScreenCraft Virtual Pitch Fall 2021and it placed as a Semifinalist! A great encouragement, and some great advice with it!

And with a pitch you can start to talk to producers and other members of the industry. HOWEVER! I did talk to an experienced producer and I did not have enough prepared past the pitch. So just know that they'll ask if you have a business ready to except money, if you have any other names attached to the projects, and really if you have anything else that can give a producer something to pitch with. The producer is the one talking to other members of the industry and they'll need any and all material to help pitch it themselves.

So what's next?

That's what I'm working on now. At the moment I'm working on three things.

  1. Script. Getting a good foundation to work with is so important for getting other people on board. The pitch is good, but if they ask for more... you need something else. At the moment I have a decent first draft, but it needs a little work before I'd be ready to share with the world.

  2. Budget. This may not be everyone's path, but something I want to do is independently produce a pilot that's all mine to then use to pitch. I personally want to own all the projects that I make, and possibly one day produce them all myself. So I'm learning about every aspect that costs money, and doing research for how much they cost. Plus if the producer asks how much money you need for a project, you can give them a rough estimate.

  3. Team. You gotta find people who will be there when things start to move. It can be hard to find them in person, but luckily the internet has been a great tool. Find people on sites like LinkedIn and Stage 32, look at their work and reach out to see if they'd be interested in the project. (Make sure to have a rough idea of what they would be paid in mind, and make sure to keep their experience in mind as well as your own budget.)

So that's where I'm at so far! Hopefully at the end of the month. A script will be ready, or at least at a good place because things can change the script throughout the process, and I'll have a budget and team in place!

Thanks for keeping up with me and feel free to reach out if you would like to be apart of the project!

Now on to the other things I've been up to in the last tenth of 2021!

Maddy Goshorn Media Projects!

I was able to make another book trailer, this one is for Barbara Britton who hired me to make my first book trailer Lioness! She's back baby! And this book is all about a Philistine warrior named Ittai. Check the trailer for Defending David.

That's all the projects for now, there's been a few other things eating my time at the moment. But if you're looking for any commercials, trailers, or any form of promotion for your own project or business let me know!

How's the Audiobook Coming?

I've made great progress actually! The original plan was to finish it by the end of the year, but there's been other things taking my attention and time. However! I am nearly half way through the book, and (fingers crossed) it'll be finished by the end of February!

A couple of Voice Acting Jobs have come along too!

I was able to play my returning character for The Rise of King Asilas, Lord Vanessa Banks. She had a bigger hand in this season! Thank you to JV Torres for asking me to return!

And even thought this happened awhile ago I can now share the game where I play the dastardly Ursula in Whispered Secrets: Ripple of the Heart. It's a fun puzzle and point and click adventure, you can hear me in the trailer! But also in the game as well, check it out!

I was cast in another independent animation project, but it's in it's early stages at the moment! I'll share more when I can!

On the creative film making side...

Unfortunately I didn't have the time to finish any skits. I started to edit the next skit, however looking back on it, the frame rate is off. I had filmed in early last year and I hadn't had the amount of experience I do now to know better. But hey I know now! But it'll take time to edit and it may be a bit until I can work on it again. For now the pilot is taking most of my filmmaking time.

And that's about it! I'm still working on the craft, auditioning all the time, and working online with my fellow creators.
